The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™
September 25 – October 10, 2010

For 16 days in 2010, Lexington Kentucky will host the World Equestrian Games. As we draw near to that event, the Kentucky Horse Park, our city and our community are changing. We are “ramping up” on various ambitious projects with an optimistic fervor that gives little or no indication of a gloomy economic forecast. No one knows for sure where all of this is headed but this we do know.

At 8:00am on September 25, 2010 the games will begin and for 16 days Lexington will again be at the focal point of world class Equestrian eventing. Stay tuned to Video Free Lexington for more local and “backside” access into the Equestrian community of Kentucky as we report on this upcoming global event.

In the wake of three high profile equestrian sports deaths in two weeks PETA descended on the National Racing Commission in Lexington Kentucky. Immediately following the death of Eight Belles this week in the Kentucky Derby and the deaths of Frodo Baggins and Quiet Man last week during the Rolex Three Day Event, PETA organized a protest change in the industry.

The mood here in Kentucky is somber following three equestrian deaths during two high profile events. This has been an especially sad and terrible week in Kentucky equestrian sports. Two horses were killed at the Rolex Three Day Event last weekend. Today, the second place winner of the Kentucky Derby collapsed on the track after completeing the race. Having scratched the Oaks in order to be in the Kentucky Derby, Eight Belles, the only filly in this years race was put down after both of her front ankles were broken in her 5 length defeat to Big Brown.

The season in general has been plagued with deadly accidents. Public reaction here in Lexington has been supportive but concerned. It was not immediately clear what had happened to the fallen horse but typical post derby celebration was cut short and Churchhill Downs cleared quickly after word spread that Eight Belles was dead. When Eight Belles collapsed on the track many thoughts returned to the Preakness when Babaro fractured an ankle. Sadly after having taken second place in the 134th Kentucky Derby, Eight Belles suffered a rare event in which both front ankles were injured forcing officials to euthanize the three year old immediately while she still lay on the track.

As with any sport there is risk. It seems that for now, Kentucky is at the focus of concerns regarding safety in equestrian sports. I invite your discussion and words of support.

Mad Dog Bad Dog

Trained dog does tricks for camera. Also trained to be vocal she throws a fit when she can’t go outside to go potty. Angered by the storm she settles for a little indoor frisbee.

Suddenly she pretends to no longer understand the english language and can’t do her tricks anymore. Growls at camera when told she’s a bad dog.

“the bitch with personality”
Maggie the “Black Ashton”

Training is so easy for this very intelligent dog breed. For more about this rare dog breed search YouTube or Google for “Black Ashton” and other rare dog breeds.

Singing Dog

Singing Dog. Maggie’s Song.

Although Maggie just turned 10 she’s still making videos.  It occured to us at VFL that we never showed Maggie singing. She’s been doing this for years.  You’re most likely going to see her do it while leaving the McDonalds drive thru.  For more video of Maggie check this blog or tune in at her website playlist.

Relax and remember your youth when you walked through your own local county fair.

Performed at the Kentucky Horse Park

She warned us, but we didn’t listen. Maggie hates the Lexington Jacobson park “dog park”.  Watch this well known, smart & small dog defend herself in two dog attacks occuring within seconds of each other.

Patrick Swayze is fighting cancer.  My hopes for a full & speedy recovery.  Patrick Swayze is seen here showing his Arabian horse at the Kentucky Horse Park.
